All eyes have been on the see saw of the DOW and the growth of unemployment. We sit on standstill, waiting for Congress to decide if they should bailout the Auto Industry.
Many industries are vulnerable to layoffs right now. You might feel a ping of dread, wondering if you might be next in line.
Pressure may come from the higher ranks to arm twist your clients to take action they don't need. A flutter might reside in your chest as you look at your balance sheet and cause you to take on a client who didn't need you. A warning to increase your numbers might make you exaggerate (lie) about your product's value to get a client to buy.
To everyone who markets, sells, and promotes a service or product remember that if we had more honesty in business we'd be sitting in a different place than we are today. Now we pass accountablility back and forth with still no real solutions. No one knows how far we have to fall because we haven't stopped falling.
We have never been in this place before. Only time will tell.
Fear tempts people into taking the wrong path. You don't have to be a "do gooder". But you shouldn't ever be in a position where you are sacrificing your client for your own personal gain. Yes, even "just making ends meat" is your own personal gain.
PollyAnna aside, there's a difference between selling the sale and selling your soul.
If you have a business model and a product/service that makes sense and you work smart you will make money. I don't care how far we fall, if you are laser focused you will survive.
If you cut corners and start making excuses to take the easier way out, posturing your services and products, knowingly taking on clients who don't have a need for your product, or just plain lying to get the sale there is no excuse.
I 've had this post title sitting in my drafts folder for nearly three weeks waiting to be written. A prompt came to me in the form of Seth Godin's post, "Just Doing My Job". Here's a preview,
"...The fact that you're just doing your job doesn't make unemployment any better. And if the company is hurting people or the world you operate in, it doesn't matter who told you to do it, you still did it."
Thank you Seth for righting my belief in marketers. It was wobbling a bit. For those who don't get it and think that excuses are justified, get a clue.
Integrity is not a bargaining chip. This is a not so gentle reminder.
